I am feeling dumb today. I have finished Getting to Know ArcGIS and GIS Tutorial 1 using the license for DT10.1 provided with the first book installed about a month ago. Started GIS Tutorial 2 (the latest edition for 10.1) yesterday and am stumped first Chapter. The book is telling me to simply "add the layer file LandUseCodes.lyr from the \GIST2\Data folder." Adding the data results in the proverbial red asterisk. That is, it shows up in TOC with its categories but does not display. If I try Data>Repair Data Source or >Properties>Source>Set Data Source in either ArcMap or Catalog none of the .lyr files show up in the Data Folder (where they are). The Show File types fpor the Data Repair, Set Data windows only offer feature classes. Doesn't appear to be anything else to select anywhere. Checked the folder-other file types that I know are in the folder show up so I am looking in the right folder. On top of that, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the data on the book's cd several times and in different places. I checked "Map Properties" and made sure the box was checked to "Store relative pathnames to data sources."
There are 8 of these .lyr files in the data file that comes with the book. I checked them all out in ArcCatalog--only 2 of the 8 will display (preview). The 6 others cannot be previewed because they are missing the source ("missing or corrupt") and I can't figure out a way to set the source. Until I can, I am getting nowhere with the exercises and assignments. I ran into this a lot with the Getting to Know... books data but was always able to Repair Data Source. I am guessing that is because they must have been .shp files (the one .shp file in the data shows up and I can do most anything with that).
What did I miss or forget in regards to these *.lyr files? Out of desperation, created a geodatabase and tried to add them--no go. Same for a personal geodatabase. Right clicking on them in ArcCatalog didn't lead to any alternatives that seemed likely to solve the problem. Help was no help and I metacrawled and searched the forum.
Now, I can't find an emoticon that implies I have a gut feeling I am about to feel really dumb for not being able to solve what must be a simple problem. "Yikes"
