Add Field removes a bunch of layers in ArcMap

Hi friends,

Whenever I add a field to one feature class in my ArcMap document, for some reason it removes a bunch of layers in my table of contents.

I am not sure how/why the two are related, but I am able to reproduce this 100% of the time.

Anyone know how I can add a field to any table without having to again add the layers that get lost?
