Problem:
There is no provision in ArcMap 10.1 to insert a logo with a transparent background onto a layout. I did not invent the solution but I merely passing along because it is very helpful. Credit goes to those helpful folks at GISCO.
Workaround:
From the draw toolbar draw a point graphic. Open the properties window – go to symbology – edit symbology. Change the marker type to picture marker, navigate to your transparent logo saved as a PNG and then apply and okay all. If it is too small, which is likely, increase the value to something like 60 or 80. If placed within the data frame it is sometimes difficult to select and to change its properties again.
