Projections on-the-fly cpu intensive?

Are there any performance costs to doing projections on-the-fly or are all data projected on-the-fly by default? In other words, are all data stored using a coordinate system internal to ESRI software and therefore projected on-the-fly irregardless of whether or not the data and the data frame are in the same coordinate system?
