For ArcGIS server I need to use UNC paths to access my data. Unfortunately when I try to access my file geodatabases through UNC path in ArcCatalog it tells me...

Cannot Acquire a schema lock because of an existing lock."
Other people are accessing the geodatabase, but that never stopped me from accessing and pointing to data in the past. Why is this happening?
