Tutorial data: installation issues

I am trying to install the 10.2.1 Desktop Tutorial Data but it fails every time with an error indicating that I must uninstall previous versions. The trouble is that I have never installed the tutorial data on that machine. In fact, it is a brand new machine. I've tried on 2 other machines that never had tutorial data installed and the result is the same.

This is the error: "A version previous to ArcGIS 10.1 Tutorial Data exists on your machine. You must uninstall the previous version of ArcGIS Tutorial Data before installing ArcGIS 10.2.1 Desktop Tutorial Data."

Nonsense. None of the machines have ever had the tutorial data installed.

Has anyone ever seen this or have any suggestions?
