problem converting kml-to-layer and then layer-to-kml

I'm having difficulty with file conversions and I'm hoping someone can provide insight.

I'm trying to take a KML file (polygons of neighbourhood areas), convert it to a layer, join it with an Excel spreadsheet, categorize some polygons by quantity, then convert the new layer back into a KML file for use on Google Maps.

I have done this process many times before, except previously I have started with shapefiles, not with KML files.

I am able to convert the kml file to a layer, join it, categorize it -- everything looks great -- but then ArcMap either crashes or gives me a generic error saying the conversion failed when I try to convert the layer to a KML. The result is a .tmp folder (e.g. _ags_dir4f131d03604448369ebd5248e7bbe209.tmp ) with a file inside called doc.kml. The file is blank when opened.

To try to determine where the problem is, I tried converting the kml into a layer, and then immediately converting the layer into a kml. Same problem.

In the case the problem was with the initial kml file I was using, I tried converting a kml file I had previously produced in ArcMap to a layer, then immediately converting the layer into a kml. Same problem.

I'm stymied and stumped. Has anyone else seen this problem? Do I have a setting set incorrectly or whatnot? Is ArcMap simply unable to convert a kml to a layer, then later convert the layer BACK to a kml?

I'm using ArcMap 10.0, build 2414.
