Linking excel table to GIS

I have been approached by a project manager to do research on the potential for an excel spreadsheet being linked to an .mxd in some manner. The idea is for them to be able to make changes in the spreadsheet and the information be updated instantly in the map. I wasn't sure if this was possible so I thought I would ask.
