Use of WGS 84 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere)

I've been getting very confused over the correct use of this projection.

I've been creating a feature class from a table of lat long coordinates exported from a google maps based web app. My understanding was that google maps/bing maps etc used WGS 84 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere) so I chose that as the input coordinate system. The data was way off (my data frame is in British National Grid). Re-projecting the feature class into BNG didn't help.
When I did the same process but using WGS84 as the input coordinate system, everything worked fine.

I thought that there was very little difference between these two systems, but that the Web Mercator (auxiliary sphere) would be the correct one to use for google maps data. I'm sure I've used it in the past with no problems which is why I'm so confused.

Would anybody be able to shed some light on this for me? Thanks.
