in_memory workspace

How to use “in_memory” workspace? I found a feature class in a geoprocessing tool published by Esri (Trace_Geometric_Network), that points to “in_memory\{2D852934-4BBD-47AC-A02D-2F36C285E53F}” but I didn’t understand this. I need to change the coordinate system of the feature class itself (flags). The model is attached.

hani

Symbolise Multiple Values

Hi,
I have a feature class I wish to symbolise by two fields. I did try and use multiple values but it asks me to set a variation on the unique sizes and it looks as if this variation can only be a numerical field.
I have two text fields [LAPSED] (containing 2 values) and [STATUS] (containing 3 values) and I wish to symbolise each attribute by these two fields only- any ideas?
Thanks in advance

CSV file link to layer broken

Hello
I am working on a project which already has layers produced. Many of the folders have been moved, so the source links were lost. I've managed to repair the links, however on one particular layer I have a question about the original CSV file. I'm not sure how to check that the layer is still linked to the CSV - can anyone help with this? The data on the CSV file no longer shows up in the attributes table which is why I'm not sure if it is still linked. Can I fix the link so that new points can be added?
I hope that all makes sense!
Many thanks

Plotting Horizontal Wells in ArcScene

I have been messing around making some 3-D maps in ArcScene using well data, i can use the extrusion to make the well bores go down to their specified depths, however in my data i know that there are a few horizontal wells and I obviously cant extrude them down. So I am curious if anyone has been able to map horizontal wells, I have access to any data I would need for this I think, but I am not sure what that would be. Any help would be greatly appreciatedAttachment 34542!

Comparing a point layer and a polygon layer with a spatial query?

$

Hi, and thanks for looking at my post. I am working more with spatial queries and what I want to do is to take a point layer and do a spatial query against it with a polygon layer. Address point to building structue polygons. I am wanting to find where the Parcel numbers match, and then if the Type fields do not match on the matching point/polygon.

I want to compare all the points, against all the structure polygons and get a selection set of those that do
match on the Type field.

The following code returns all of the address points.

I am not sure if I have it correct, or if this is the right approach to what I want to do.

Dim pFeatureSelection As ESRI.ArcGIS.Carto.IFeatureSelection = AddressLayer
pStructureLayer.FeatureClass = pWS.OpenFeatureClass("GIS.STRUCTURES")
Dim pStructureSpatialQ As ISpatialFilter = New SpatialFilter
pStructureSpatialQ.SpatialRel = esriSpatialRelEnum.esriSpatialRelIntersects
pStructureSpatialQ.GeometryField = pStructureLayer.FeatureClass.ShapeFieldName
pStructureSpatialQ.WhereClause = "PIN LIKE PIN And TYPE NOT LIKE TYPE2"
pStructureSpatialQ.SearchOrder = esriSearchOrder.esriSearchOrderSpatial

pFeatureSelection.SelectFeatures(pStructureSpatialQ, ESRI.ArcGIS.Carto.esriSelectionResultEnum.esriSelectionResultNew, False)

Thank you for your time. Dale,

Possible to update queried layers automatically when modifying base layer's data?

I have a map of certain oil wells in a state. This production data is updated frequently (once a month) and I have Related them to
their respective waste reports (one to many relationship).
A series of simple queries based on location and attributes are my other layers.

So my question is if it is possible to have these queries update when the new reports come out. My bosses want to use this map but without having to learn or sit and operate a query every time new data comes out.

If there a way I can automate the entire process to auto update the queries?

Examples of queries used:
1. Select wells in a particular county
2. Select wells by proximity to a facility
(it has to create a new layer for them to see it on the map)

I'm new to ArcGIS and any kind of help would be appreciated!

map package referencing data

$

How does a map package format the path for referencing data? What I am trying to achieve is a map package that uses someones local geodatabase (everyone has a .gdb in the same location C:/common/path/to/data.gdb). However, even in that scenario the map package is failing in the runtime so I'm wondering if the path in the map package has a machine name added to it or something.

Another possible scenario I'm facing would be mpk and data (some in SDE and some in file geodatabase) on the same machine and then both the mpk and data getting moved to a new machine. The data needs to be referenced rather than packaged into the map package.

Any tips for setting up packages for these scenarios?

Bessel 1841 Gauss Kruger to ETRS 1989 UTM Zone 34N

I have a shapefile with data from Macedonia that has Bessel 1841/Gauss Kruger as projection. I realize Bessel 1841 is a spheroid, not really a datum. I am trying to figure which datum would be best for projection. I would eventually like the data to be projected to ETRS 1989/UTM Zone 34N. Any ideas on an intermediate datum that might be useful for projecting this data?

So far I have tried projecting first to Pulkovo_1995_GK_Zone_5, Pulkovo_1995_GK_Zone_6, and Pulkovo_1942_GK_Zone_5. Then reprojecting to ETRS 1989/UTM Zone 34N. This helps a little but it does not seem to align well with some landscape features in another file.

Some more details about the current projection:

Removing duplicate points across multiple layers

$

So first of all, I am a student and relatively new to ArcGIS (two classes) so if I'm doing something ridiculous beyond my question, I'd love to hear how I can do this better..

I am working with my neighborhood association to figure out which streetlights in the neighborhood are not working so we can submit an organized list/map to the city with locations, bulb types, wattages, etc., with the hopes this will help them more efficiently fix our lights.

I have the streetlights file and have already done a select by location to narrow it down to just the lights in the neighborhood. While the data is thorough it contains nothing about whether or not the light works. So my plan is to go through the neighborhood at night and record which lights work and which don't. I have selected each street segment and then all the lights within 30 feet of those street segments (ie there are 15 lights within 30 feet of Main Street). My thought was that breaking the neighborhood down by streets would make my collection efforts more efficient.

My issue is that at each intersection, the same light is counted on both streets (in each layer file). This occurs at pretty much every intersection in the neighborhood and there are over 50 intersections. How can I remove all but one of those instances from my layers so that each light is only counted once. It doesn't matter which layer the light ends up being counted on. I am just trying to eliminate duplicates so I'm not wasting time and when I join all my streets back together there are no multiples. Any ideas??

Also, is this even the best way to approach this? To a lesser extent my data will also help the city find out if the electric company has collected accurate data on these streetlights. I am also going to be looking at the spread of the various bulbs to try and identify dark spots in the neighborhood and comparing that to crime data to see if we need more lights in certain areas. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Legend for layers with transparency set?

$

Hi

This has bugged me for a long time and I am sure ESRI must have solved this by now.

If I have a layer on my map that has a transparency set, when I create my legend, the symbol for that layer obviously doesn't reflect accurately the colour. For example, if my layer is a solid red at 50% transparency, it actually is a pink colour and the legend still shows it as solid red.

Other than a manual creation of an icon for the legend, there must be a way for the legend to pick up layers with transparency?!

Thanks

10.1SP1 Transformations dialog box missing?

Hi all,

I need to add a bing basemap layer to a map i am building.
Before i usually opened a pre made map with bing basemap on it (WGS84 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere) and dragged it to my new map with the desired coordinate system (WGS 84 UTM ZONE 33S).
In the past a dialog box would open that allow me to transform between the two.
Now it just puts the basemap in the new map keeping its original system.

Any ideas?

.JPR, .QCT, .MAP, .PNG files usable in ArcMap?

$

Hi everyone,

We were given a set of raster topographic maps that we were told was georeferenced. Unfortunately, when we attempted to open the files in ArcMap 10.2.1, they were not georeferenced, and had Cartesian coordinates.

Each dataset consists of a .PNG file, a .MAP file (containing coordinates), a .JPR file (linker address map file, also containing coordinates), and a .QCT file (no idea what this is for).

Does anyone with lots of experience know how we can either open these files in another software as georeferenced files, and then export them to a format consumable by ArcGIS, or how to easily use the files provided and open them in ArcGIS as georeferenced?

Much thanks.

Creating an ObjectID field on a joined feture class.

Thanks for looking at my post. I am working on spatially joining two layers, a point layer and a polygon layer. What I want to to do is join an address feature class (point) and a structure feature class (polygon) so that I can compare similar field on both feature classes.

As I create the .gdb file I get an error as there is no ObjectID. I then attempt to create an ObjectID field and I cannot get it to work.

Now this is all new to me (doing a spatial join on two layers in code), so I will post my code and show you what it is crunching on:

Dim pOutWorkspaceName As IWorkspaceName = New WorkspaceName
Dim pFCName As IFeatureClassName = New FeatureClassName
Dim pDatasetName As IDatasetName = pFCName
pOutWorkspaceName.PathName = "C:\Documents\ArcGIS\Default1.gdb"
pDatasetName.Name = "Spatial_Join"
pDatasetName.WorkspaceName = pOutWorkspaceName
'Create the name object for the output join by location shapefile
Dim strOutName As String = "test"
Dim pName As IName
With pFCName
.FeatureType = esriFeatureType.esriFTSimple
.ShapeFieldName = "Shape"
.ShapeType = esriGeometryType.esriGeometryPolygon
End With
Dim pClone As IClone = pAddressesLayer.FeatureClass.Fields
Dim pFields As IFields = pClone.Clone
Dim pCLSID As UID = New UID
pCLSID.Value = "esriCore.Feature"
Dim pFieldsEdit As IFieldsEdit = pFields
Dim pField As IField = New Field
Dim pFieldEdit As IFieldEdit = pField
pFieldEdit.Name_2 = "OBJECTID"
pFieldEdit.AliasName_2 = "object identifier"
pFieldEdit.Type_2 = esriFieldType.esriFieldTypeOID
pFieldsEdit.AddField(pField)
pDatasetName = pFCName
With pDatasetName
.Name = strOutName
.WorkspaceName = pOutWorkspaceName
End With
pName = pDatasetName
'Do a join by location that joins the attributes of the
'first point contained within each polygon.
Dim pSpJoin As ISpatialJoin
Dim pFCNew As IFeatureClass
pSpJoin = New SpatialJoin
With pSpJoin
.JoinTable = pAddressesLayer.FeatureClass
.SourceTable = pParcelLayer.FeatureClass
.LeftOuterJoin = True
End With
'Setting maxMapDist to 0 means that only points within
'each each polygon will be considered
pFCNew = pSpJoin.JoinNearest(pName, 0)
'Create a new layer and add it to the Map
If Not pFCNew Is Nothing Then
Dim pNewFLayer As IFeatureLayer
pNewFLayer = New FeatureLayer
pNewFLayer.FeatureClass = pFCNew
pNewFLayer.Name = "Sample Join by Location"
m_pMap.AddLayer(pNewFLayer)
m_pMXDOC.UpdateContents()
End If

The problem is that "addField" is not avaialable on pFieldsEdit "pFieldsEdit.AddField(pField)"

But I am unsure what else to try, or even if this is the correct way to add the ObjectID field.

Thanks, Dale

Cannot open any .mxd files

User 1 has created .mxd files on her computer, then uploaded the .mxd files to a server. I then pulled the .mxd files down to my computer from the server.

When I try to open the files, they do not load, then ArcMap hangs and doesn't do anything. I tried to open then using MXD Doctor, and they didn't load there either. All I can tell is that the default geodatabase is linked to her 'My Documents' folder. Don't know if that makes a difference.

I'm on ArcMap 10.1, on an government workstation.

How to get few licenses onto several computers (rotating)

$

Hello,

We are a small operation using GIS. I am not really sure how to do this most effectively so I was looking for your guys' sage advice!

We have several computers attached to different personnel that rotate shifts out in the field. At most we may have 2-3 people working at a time, but we have about 6-7 employees and computers that we use. We can't swap computers as we all travel in to central locations from different regions and our computers, though company computers, are also our personal computers as we spend so much time traveling and working, so sharing computers is out of the question as well.

What I'd like to setup is some kind of arrangement whereby we can just check in and check out the licenses we need for work. Since only ever 2-3 operators will be needing to use ArcGIS at a time, I'd prefer only to own 2-3 licenses. Then when the next rotation of workers comes in, the people who had the licenses can check them out and the new shift can check theirs in. No one needs to use ArcGIS when not at work.

Is there a quick and easy way to do this? Most of the time when we are out at work we do not have access to the internet, so a central server or something with all the licenses to connect to isn't really an option.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
