Multiple users editing different feature datasets within a file geodatabase

My workplace is made up of 4 computers, each running windows 7 and ArcGIS 10.2.1.

Up until now, all of our projects have been shapefile based, organised into various folders. All of the data we work with is held on our server. We all access parts of the data and make edits all the time (obviously we cant edit the same shapefile at the same time, so we check with each other that a shapefile is free to edit before continuing).
We are now migrating to file geodatabases as they are supposedly quicker (see my other thread about slow selecting with shapefiles!), and it is the standard format for Arc projects nowadays.

The first geodatabase project we have set up has encountered problems however. But first here is the structure of the project in question:

FILE GEODATABASE 1
▼▼▼▼

Feature.....Dataset....A......------------------......Feature......Dataset.....B
▼▼``````````````▼▼``````````````````````▼▼```````````````▼▼

Feature Class 1....Feature Class 2....................Feature Class 3.......Feature Class 4

Now, on the ESRI resource website, it says a file geodatabase can have 'many readers or one writer per feature dataset, stand-alone feature class, or table'. So my understanding of this is that User 1 can make edits within Feature Dataset A, whilst User 2 can make edits within Feature Dataset B. correct?

However, at our office this is not the case. Our issue is that if User 1 is editing a Class within Dataset A, User 2 can NOT make any edits within Dataset B! An error will appear on his screen 'No editable layers':
Attachment 34326

Why does this happen when the ESRI resource website says that each dataset can have its own writer?
thanks in advance for any help.

Data Driven Pages and Dynamic Attachments stored in SDE

I found this help article on how to expose photos that are attached to features dynamically in data driven pages, so that each page will show its own photo.

http://support.esri.com/ja/knowledge...s/detail/42153

It tells you to navigate to the file path where the photo is stored in order to add it to the layout view of the map.

"4. Insert a picture by doing the following:
A. Click Insert > Picture.
B. Browse to and select one of the images that is referenced in the feature class attribute table.
C. Click Open."

However, my photo attachments are managed by SDE in a related table, so I don't know how to do that.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Jake

Editing Vertices Greyed out on Drawing Toolbar

I am editing some annotations in arcmap and I have an annotation that I need to change the position of along a stream. The annotation is splined to the stream but I have to redo it as I am moving it to another position. I'm not very experienced with annotations in general so I'm not sure if what I'm trying to do is correct. Right now I am in an edit session, I have the Active Annotation Target set toe the correct layer. I select the annotation I am planning to edit. In order to "re-spline" it to the stream I would select the edit vertices correct? Right now that is greyed out and I haven't found out what to do to fix it. I also have the annotation layers set to selectable in the table of contents. Is there anything else I need to check?

Thanks,

Assigning approach direction of road lanes

Hi,

I need to assign approach directions (northbound, southbound, etc.) to all turn lanes in my connectivity dataset. How would I go about doing that? I've been playing around with this problem for a week and cannot figure out what to do.

Each intersection lane (pink) is connected to two links (IN_LINK and OUT_LINK). I am ultimately interested in identifying approach directions for turn lanes only, but the through ('THRU') lanes provide IN_LINK and OUT_LINK data that I think I can use to determine the approach directions for turn lanes.

Does anyone know how I should approach this problem using Python?

Map package doesn't export joined table

Using ArcGIS 10.2, I created a mpk. EVerything went OK except that one layer was joined to an Excel table. That table did not become part of the mpk, and therefore everything that depended on it (symbology, labels, definition queries) failed. Any suggestions as to why this occurred would be welcome. Thank you.

Can't edit a arcgis online feature service in desktop 10.2.2

I just recently upgraded to 10.2.2 desktop from 10.2.1 desktop and when I try to edit a feature service fro ArcGIS Online in desktop the option to do so is no longer there.

In 10.2.1, I could right click on the group layer to enable editing, then right click the feature service to download a local copy for editing. Those options are no longer there. Is there a new way to do this in 10.2.2?

Has anyone found a working replacement for the Bulk Snap Command.

Attention ESRI staff. This is a tool that should have been BUILT in as a core tool 10 years ago when some 3rd party person first developed it.

Anyone know of a current tool that will do the same thing?

Label Zoom Visibility

ArcGIS 10.2.2 on Windows 7 32 bit (new Win 7 computer arriving tomorrow).

I'm a complete novice to ArcGIS starting now (June 2014), so speak loud and slow...

I have 10 years of experience with GIS - just not ESRI, so I know what I want to see, now how do I see it?? I've checked the Help, but following the guidance doesn't seem to work. I think I'm missing something very basic.

I'm drawing a small cemetery (4,000 spaces on a few acres). I want lot labels to appear on the grave lots when I'm at a zoom scale from 1:1 to roughly 1:500 but not any higher. As the user zooms in and out, these labels should remain one size relative to the polygon in which they pertain. So when zoomed out they should be rendered in an illegibly small font finally disappearing completely at 1:501. Above that zoom scale (1:501 and further zoomed out) I would like a block number to appear (blocks are on a different layer). I would like the block number to appear between 1:501 and 1:10,000 and then disappear at 1:10,001. At 1:10,001 and further I would like to see section labels appear. What I have now is lot and block labels appearing as 8-pt font at all scales.

I've been using the standard Label Manager. Click on Scale Range... and make the appropriate changes to Out beyond and In beyond, but that seems to do nothing. What am I missing to make this work?

There seems to be a link between these zoom scales and the Frame Reference Scale. I have tried a Frame Reference Scale of None, 1:300, and 1:24,000. There is no change from one to the other that I can see when I change these.

Also will all these scale zoom visibility features make the jump to a Geodatabase file when I'm finished? This is the most critical part. It will be going to an ArcGIS Online account, and this zoom rendering is what I'm shooting for.

[Question] Setting up Types and SubTypes

$

Hi guys, first post here, I hope to get it in the right part of the forum.

I've been using ArcGIS software for some time, throught out college and now at work.

I have a doubt here.

I was given a task to make a .gdb where we'd join/merge several diferent datalayers, they're all points, from diferente types/categories of information, and we want them to be in one single layer inside that .gdb, so when we open it we have all the information, and the possibility to choose one type or another in a fast way.

We thought about Domains / Types / Subtypes, but there's a problem, I'll try to exemplify (my english isn't the best, sorry for that)

considering two fields, Field 1 will be the 'groups' and Field 2 will be the 'subgroups', I've managed to set up the 'groups' in arcgis catalog, and confirmed it in arcgis desktop, but I wanted the 'subgroups' to be dependant on the first field - 'groups'

in other words...when editing in desktop, after i set field 1/groups, i want field 2/subgroups to give me the options/categories related to it's respective field 1/group.

Categories as example:

Field 1 / Groups
Urban
Rural
Water

Field 2 / SubGroups
Industrial (urban)
Residential (urban)
Forest (rural)
Farm (rural)
Ocean (water)
River (water)

Hope i was clear on it...if you need anything, just ask, and if you can help, help :P

How or where to access EPSG data

$

I'm new to ESRI, so I might be asking trivial questions. Still I could not find even a partial answer in the Help.

I have a new client who wants EPSG data in the attribute table. Specifically he wants the following fields filled in:
NAD83 GCS Lat
NAD83 GCS Long
NAD83 GCS EPSG Name
NAD83 GCS EPSG Code
NAD83 PRJ Easting
NAD83 PRJ Northing
NAD83 PRJ EPSG Name
NAD83 PRJ EPSG Code
NAD27 GCS Lat
NAD27 GCS Long
NAD27 GCS EPSG Name
NAD27 GCS EPSG Code
NAD27 PRJ Easting
NAD27 PRJ Northing
NAD27 PRJ EPSG Name
NAD27 PRJ EPSG Code
Elevation
Vertical Datum EPSG Name
Vertical Datum EPSG Code

These are required for a project containing one layer which contains only one (very important) point. How do I find these values in ArcGIS? Is there an easy way to get all these at one time, or do I need to create different projects in NAD83 Geo, NAD83 Projected, NAD27 Geo and NAD27 Projected? Where do you find these intrinsic values to put them into the attribute table? Or are they already part of the attribute table but just hidden?

Also I've never seen the vertical datum EPSG. Is this built into ArcGIS? I have elevation above sea level data from a Trimble, ut where do I find or define the EPSG in ArcGIS?

Automatic custom symbology when adding a layer

Hi all,
I have created a set of symbols for a layer in an ArcMAP document. The layer is symbolized by unique values and I have about 20 of them. Is there an easy way to save my symbols as the default for this layer? It would be awesome to not have to reset all those feature symbols every time I add this layer...

Thanks much!

Changing the Default Legend Style

$

Hello World,

When I am making legends, I like to use the Horizontal Single Symbol Label Only as my Legend Item Style. (Legend Properties, Items tab, Style... button)

However, I have to change the style for every new item/layer I add to the legend. Is there a way to set the Style for all legend items, even ones that haven't been added yet?

Better yet, is it possible to change a setting so that the default style option is Horizontal Single Symbol Label Only?

I'm on ArcMap 10.0 Service Pack 3.

Thank you very much,

Quentin
