Dear ESRI community:
I have converted a large amount of .e00 files to .dbf shapefiles using the ArcCatalog 10.1 process (Import from E00 -- creating coverages and then Feature Class to shapefiles). The batch processes went smoothly per detailed and helpful online instructions. Thank you.
However, upon importing the converted data into ArcMap 10.1, the projection is clearly off. I tried multiple maps to make sure. All the data is aligned, but it all appears as if I am looking at the maps from a bird's eye view; proportionally they seem shortened in the Y-axis and therefore oddly appear to be in perspective. The properties of the imported shapefiles shows that they are GCS_Clarke_1866.
What is the process for both identifying the projection of the original .E00 files (if applicable?) and selecting the correct projection for the converted files? Do I change the actual projection of the shapefiles I have already created or did I miss an input in the conversion process and therefore need to start over with the original .E00 files?
In ArcCatalog 10.1 > Toolbox > Data Management Tools > Projections and Transformations... there are multiple options for changing projection and defining the projection of features. Is this a possible path? Not sure which projection to choose and whether I should have tried to define the projection earlier in the .E00 conversion process.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.
