unable to enable changes to 'page and print setup' dialog arcmap 10

I need to make a few simple changes to the way a map document (page orientation, size). However, the dialog, no matter what I do, always has the 'OK' button blanked out. (attachment rjl1)

Tried the usual searches and found nothing thus this post.

Additionally, attempting to 'change' printers just 'adds' another entry of whatever printer was set as default, doesn't make any changes if you try to select another - the pulldown list only appears for a fraction of a second, and 're-adds' the existing printer to the ever-growing list. (attachment rjl2).

All I /freaking/ need to do is reorient the page and set the size so I can export as pdf or image...

I'm using unfortunately v. 10.0 (if I were able to use 9.9.1 I'd have far, far fewer problems - or at least more 'familiar' problems).

The .mxd isn't 'locked' or on any sort of restricted directory (anyway that shouldn't matter until I want to save).

Any ideas?

Of course the good old 're-do everything all over from scratch' 'solution' might be tried, but as with other programs one likes to do a time-consuming operation and expect it to work (as is possible with every other program - come on!)

This exact same problem also occurred the /last/ time I needed to do a page setup, on an entirely different computer at an entirely different Government agency. At the time I recall the only solution was to restart the computer and program, and hope that you could make the necessary changes immediately after re-start, as the problem seems more likely the longer the program had been running - today it's only been an hour or two.

This is an example of the endless hassle and vast amount of time I've wasted for over a decade now trying to work around the innumerable bugs in this program - every 'version' gets worse... I need to do very a basic operation and even /that/ can't be done... Unfortunately the US Government only knows how to buy every new 'version' of this that comes along, and in addition to that expense, I waste even more taxpayer's money trying to get it to work at even a basic level... If I had the choice, I'd use something better and more reliable!
