this number field can only have 3 digit(s) to the left of the point

I have a number field, whcih is a double data type, it has a Precision of 18 and a scale of 15. When I try to enter a number like 1052.23 I get the error message: this number field can only have 3 digit(s) to the left of the point. What I don't understand is that I've enterered numbers like this before, I open the attribute table and I can see examples like 1027.828. Did the field become corrupted.
