update annotation workflow

Hello,

what is the recommended workflow to update annotation from one source to a production SDE.

currently I:
1 - delete feature
2 - append annotation feature classes

the problem I encounter is that it keeps reproducing the anno classes with 'class_1' instead of appending into the existing classes

is there anyway to bulk update an annotation feature class keeping the exisiting anno classes (assuming anno classes are identical in source and target)?

(..... I could go back to my old way and make a featureclass_new, then shutdown all my map services, rename featureclass, restart services.....)
