Definition query prevents feature template from displaying

I applied a definition query to the ObjectID of a line feature class in a file gdb so that I'd only see one line, to make it easier to edit. When I started editing, the feature template for the line class doesn't display in the Create Features window. It is in the Organize Feature Templates window, but that doesn't help. There's nothing helpful (fields, etc.) in the Properties window in the Organize... window. Deleting and re-adding the template doesn't help. Removing the definition query fixes the problem, but then the other lines get in the way.

Is this a known bug, or how it's supposed to work? More importantly, how can I get around this? Thanks.
