ArcGIS 10.x SMB2 resulting in poor performance?

I have been investigating reports by some of our users regarding poor ArcGIS 10.x performance off and on ever since it was first deployed. I have been able to identify some problems with our WAN accelerator devices (riverbed's) that were initially not set to optimize SMB2 traffic but down negotiate it to SMB1 - it seemed that the Riverbed's were having a hard time down negotiating some of the SMB2 features that the ArcGIS i10.x software was using (like SMB symbolic links) - enabling SMB2 optimization on both Steelheads seemed to resolve that issue. Setting up the clients to use SMB2 but disabling opportunistic locking seemed to resolve their local performance issues.

Is there any published documentation on what file system features the various versions of Arc GIS is dependant on? I am looking to find out if it is fully compatible (and will work at full speeds) using only SMB2 (and is it recommended that opslocking be disabled?), or if it can use SMB1 (or will that reduce functionality?) - Are NTFS extended attributes used in ArcGIS 10.x when using both SMB2/SMB1 traffic? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2550581 doesn't identify the particular applications that cause the issue but it made me wonder...)

Is there any plans to support SMB3 in Server 2012?

Thanks!
