Desktop/Catalog crashing/freezing

I am curently using ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 on a Windows 7 PC. Lately, my ArcMap and ArcCatalog have been crashing and freezing quit eoften, specially when creating new MXD documents. I tried doing a Repair and also tried installing SP1 to see if these problem would have been addressed, but with no success. The program worked perfectly up until abou a couple weeks ago and the issues began. Could it have been caused as a result of a Windows 7 update? The most recent Windows updates have been for Windows Security Essentials. I am tempted to see if doing a complete reinstall would fix the problem, but I am doubtful if the problem has arised from Windows 7 and not ArcGIS itself. Any direction on this matter woul dbe greatly appreciated! Thanks!
