Clarke 1866 Stereographic North Pole to WGS 1984 Transformation

Hi,
I'm trying to use the Project tool on a WGS 1984 long/lat layer to change it to Clarke 1866 Stereographic North Pole. ArcGIS 10.1 doesn't automatically choose a datum transformation. The polar layer comes from USGS, and is probably digitized from an old paper map that used Clarke 1866. I would suppose that the datum would be NAD 1927, right? There are a bunch of NAD27 to WGS84 transformations. The document http://downloads2.esri.com/support/T...re93_81408.zip indicates that some of these are good for Canada or Greenland, which I think would be good for the small scale we're working at. But we get an error when we choose any transformation that says the transformation is not valid. How should we handle this?
Thanks,
Mark Thomas
