Attribute field locks up

Hello everyone,
I have had that happened to me twice. while in ArcMap I open up the attribute table for a file and right click on a field that I want to delete, when I click on delete to delete that field nothing happens. Can anyone help me solving this problem? And it has nothing to do with the freeze/unfreeze column.
