NDVI using regular digital cameras?

I want to work with NDVI. The idea is to modify one camera removing the IR filter and add a special filter so no visible light passes to the sensor. Can I use the normal picture for Bands 2, 3 and 4, and the modified one for Band 5 (some cameras can sense to 1,7 nm I read in an article)?
