ArcMap causes labels to be drawn upside down along a curved line

Hi

I have a set of street centrelines which are labelled using Maplex. I have the character spacing enabled which causes the labels to be stretched to fit the feature, allowing a nice spread out, curved fit to the feature. However, where the feature is curved, the labels are spread resulting in upside down text:

Is this a known issue or is it a case of just avoiding using spread characters?
