10.1 - Selection feature is not working

Hello all

I have just upgraded to v10.1 and am having difficulty using the selection feature. I am able to select by polygon/rectangle etc, select by attribute and by highlighting entries in the attribute table but the following features do not work:

- select by location
- select all
- switch selection

EDIT: I have gotten this to work on another shapfile. The one with the issue had a join (to excel file) and definition query on this join if that helps at all?

Any advice would be most appreciated
