Can't save MXDs from Windows to a Samba share

Hello all,

We have recently acquired some new disk space on a Linux server that we are mounting via Samba to our local Windows 7 PCs running ArcGIS 10.1. For some reason we are unable to save an MXD to this file space. The file permissions seem to be fine - I am able to save files from Windows apps such as Word, Excel, Notepad, etc with no problem. I am also able to create a new shapefile in this file space using ArcCatalog, and edit and save it using ArcMap. But when trying to save an MXD, it pauses for a long time before coming back with the error message "Arcmap cannot give a document the same name as an open document. Type a different name for the document you want to save."

The only similar reference I can find is this one, involving the publishing of a GIS resource residing in a Samba directory: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/...74DF5E1272226/. Thinking we might be having a problem similar to this, we have disabled opportunistic locking ("oplocks") in smb.conf, but this did not resolve the problem.

Anyone have any insights?

Specifically, the shares are served using Samba Version 3.6.9-167.el6_5 from a server running Red Hat 4.4.6-3. The same problem occurs when saving an MXD using ArcGIS 10.1 (SP1) on both a desktop PC running Windows 7 Enterprise (64-bit) and a server running Windows Server Enterprise.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.
