Why do fields in a join become strings?

I joined a table from a csv to a shapefile with of all countries in the world. When I open the attributes table I see the joined data but they become string fields. For visualization I need them to be integers and I understand how to convert via the calculator. Is there a way to prevent them from joining as string fields in the first place in order to save a step?
