Problem with GIS Tutorial 10.1 workbook assignment

I'm having trouble with the 1-2 assignment in the workbook. I've gone through Getting to Know ArcGIS for desktop 10.0 (3 times) and 10.1 before starting the workbook but I'm still stumbling on assignment 1-2.

I'm doing this by myself at home so I have no instructor to ask.

Are there any videos showing that assignment? One of the problems is with the attribute table that only shows the 13 crimes. When I save it as a layer it shows all 274 crimes even if I have selected them.

Any help would be appreciated.
