Save the map extent within a layer-file

We use a lot of layer-files (.lyr). Unfortunately, if I open one in an empty ArcMap document, the map extent is way off the actual data and also the map scale is very small (1:200'000'000). Is there a way to control the map extent and scale for layer-files?
