Adding an ArcGIS Server for sharing services

I just started using ArcGIS for Desktop a few weeks ago - about a year ago, my colleague set up a free account for ArcGIS online which he used to feel out the system and generate a few maps. I'm recreating his work in the Desktop environment, plus developing some additional maps. In a few months, we should be ready to migrate the Desktop maps to the Online account - at that time, we'll purchase a subscription to ArcGIS Online.

In the meantime, I'd like to do a trial run of migrating a map from Desktop to ArcGIS Online. I can connect to our Online account through the Desktop file menu and access the maps we have online. But if I try to share the map as a service (so that it becomes a webmap), I'm hitting a wall when the wizard asks me to connect to an ArcGIS server and requests the URL.

Is there a publicly available URL that we can use to connect to the ArcGIS Online GIS Server, one that will work with a login ID and password for a free Online account? Or do we need to purchase a subscription to ArcGIS online first, and following that we'll get access to the URL?
